Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty
These two procedures are often used to treat compression fractures in the spinal column, some which may be the result of osteoporosis. In both of these procedures, x-ray or other imaging is used to inject a cement mixture into a fractured bone (vertebroplasty) or to insert a balloon into the fractured bone to create a space and then fill it with cement (kyphoplasty). Pain relief from the fracture may occur immediately or over several days. Depending on the complexity of the surgery, patients may be able to return home the same day as surgery. Activity levels, pain management and care of the incision will be thoroughly discussed with the patient prior to and after the procedure.
